When I first started my fitness regime, I focused on cardio all the time. I soon realized though, while cardio is excellent for heart health, it cannot compete with strength training when it comes to building muscle and toning your body.
It’s a fact, that after the age 30, women lose 3% of their muscle every year. Unfortunately, this is around the time that we also start to gain weight, so we are losing muscle and gaining fat! To get your body into it’s best possible shape, we need to reverse this by increasing our muscle and losing fat!
That’s where strength or resistance training comes into it. As we train with weights, or even just bodyweight strength exercises, we are working on increasing our muscle and the more muscle our body has, the more calories our body will burn (even while we sleep!)
In our studio, our workouts always includes a mix of strength and cardio training. I call it Metabolic training. By changing between strength exercises (slow and controlled) and cardio (faster moving) you get the benefits of both! A great example of this type of workout would be:
45-60 second intervals:
- High knee jog or sprint on the spot
- Dumbbells in hands for a Squat and Shoulder Press
- Star Jumps
- Pushups on your knees or toes
- 15-metre shuttle runs or power walks
- Dumbbell at your chest and legs wide for a wide sumo squat
You can repeat this 3 times with a 1-minute rest in between rounds.
You will find yourself puffing (enjoying the cardio benefit), plus you’ll feel your muscles too (strength benefit)!
This is such a great way to take your fitness to the next level, while still working at your own comfort level too! It’s not boring either – you need plenty of variety to make it fun!
That’s what Inspiring Strength in Women is all about. You can work at your own level with all the guidance and support you need, with the added benefit of friendly women working out alongside you. We make sure you are exercising safely and effectively. Also, we can offer alternate exercises if there is something you cannot do, e.g. if you have any injuries or aches and pains in certain spots. There is always something you can do, so please do not be deterred from improving your health and fitness!
