If you are looking to kickstart your health and fitness in time for Spring and Summer, you should fire up that body of yours, get out of the “winter” mode (of on the couch in front of the fire) and step into the “spring” mode – adjusting your thinking to get moving and burning some calories once more.
I’ve been training women for many years here in my studio, and I believe the secret to transforming your body and fitness is by firing up your metabolism once and for all.
As we age, our metabolism naturally slows down. This makes it so much harder to keep our weight stable, often we find kilos piling on and wonder where on earth they came from. This means our clothes are feeling tighter and uncomfortable, making us feel depressed and unhappy with the way we look.
The good news is that most of the time we can turn that slowing metabolism around! A great way to start is by shaking up your exercise routine.
If you are used to walking, try to run a little. Or if you always walk, try challenging yourself with a weights workout indoors. I love to mix everything together, and I believe this is the answer to a fantastic level of fitness, less boredom and a toned, energetic body too!
At Inspiring Strength in Women we mix up our training, so we are doing for example 1 minute of heavy weight exercises, then 1 minute of fast cardio, then 1 minute of an isometric exercise such as a plank or squat hold, then repeat! These workouts can be difficult, but everyone can work at her own comfort level and still get amazing results!
I love to have variety in our workouts. I get bored easily and need to keep myself motivated with fun, challenging drills in our studio sessions. You can even take it outdoors for a workout something like this:
- Power Walk or Run 5 minutes out
- Find a park bench and complete 20 pushups, 20 step ups and 20 tricep dips
- Power Walk or Run another 2 minutes
- Perform a Plank Hold for 1 minute followed by a Squat Hold for 1 minute
- Power Walk or Run back to the park bench for another set of 20 pushups, 20 step ups and 20 tricep dips
- Power Walk or Run 5 minutes back to the start.
So for a 20 minute workout you will get maximum cardio and strength benefit by mixing up your moves.
